This Sinn 556a came in recently just needing a movement service, the reason I’ve featured it is because a) I love Sinn watches and b) it’s one of Sinn’s entry level watches. However, despite it being ‘entry level’ the design and finish of this watch is phenomenal. Sinn are one of the few ‘smaller’ brands to produce their own cases and it shows in the beautifully machined and executed example on this 556a. It has a satinised finish which comes somewhere between polished and brushed giving it a clean appearance.

At the rear of the watch the ETA 2824-2 movement is visible through the display back.

The movement itself is elaboré grade and is beautifully finished and put together with it’s gilt signed rotor, geneva stripes and blued screws. OK it’s only chemical blueing but it’s a lovely touch.

With the autowind mechanism removed more of the finish work can be seen.

Here the movement’s stripped down as much as I need to to minimise any accidental damage to anything and is ready for removal.

I’ve removed the dial and handset in this shot which gives a view of the angled numerals the disc needs for the date window at 4.30.

The strip down continued….

….until it was ready for cleaning and inspection.

The re-assembly commenced with a new mainspring.

What a beautifully simple and elegant dial and handset. The 556a version has the aviator type arrangement with the numerals at 3,6,9 and 12 whilst the 556i is sans any numerals.

And that’s it completed. It’s a simply designed watch but oh so lovingly executed, it’s no wonder Sinn has such a loyal customer base. I love the brand 🙂
